HIGHLIGHTS
John McEuen
(Founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)
co-presented by KBCO 97.3FM
Fri, April 2
A broad spectrum of music Americana, with a bit of "the old country" music
thrown in for good measure, has made John McEuen known as America's
instrumental poet. A founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John is an
award-winning multi-instrumentalist, whose skills on the banjo, fiddle, guitar
and mandolin have led critics and fans to call him "the String Wizard." Onstage,
John incorporates vintage instruments with a sensational instrumental wizardry
that keeps the audience entranced the entire show.
Moya Brennan — The
Voice of Clannad
co-presented by Celtic Events and Kolacny Music
Sat, April 3
"I think she has one of the greatest voices the human ear has ever experienced"
(Bono)
Like her sister Enya, Grammy Award winning artist Moya Brennan has decided to
phonetically spell her Gaelic name. Moya is known worldwide as the voice of
Clannad, her Grammy Award winning family band who pioneered the popular Celtic
sounds for films, TV shows and commercials. With their fresh, vibrant, and
progressive sound, Clannad sent tremors through the world of traditional music.
Laura Goldhamer & The Silvernail,
Tanukis, Widow's Bane and Dovekins
Sat, April 10
It has been said that Laura Goldhamer & The Silvernail probably puts on
one of the most intriguing, jaw-dropping shows in town. Put them on the same
stage as indie-experimentalists Tanukis, Widow's Bane and their
self-described sound that is "not unlike that of the earth itself being torn
asunder," and the Dovekins' unique brand of psychedelic/western
swing/bluegrass; and what you get is one of the most eclectic concerts in town.
Michelle Shocked—
Arkansas Traveler 20th Anniversary Tour
co-presented by KBCO 97.3FM
Fri, April 16
Touring in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her critically acclaimed
album, Arkansas Traveler, self-proclaimed "sophisticated hillbilly"
Michelle Shocked claims that she "wasn't born too good." Scour the web for
information on her, and all you get is a Facebook page that proclaims she is
just "your average anarchist, punk-rock, born-again Christian." But her music
speaks to a different tune. Upbeat, pop-influenced songs that speak of love and
other contemplations, this Los Angeles based bad-ass has been writing music for
over 23 years now, and attending one of her concerts might just leave you a
little, well...Michelle Shocked!
John Oates (of
Hall & Oates)
Sat, April 17
After having a landmark year in 2009, John Oates (of Hall & Oates)
has been steady at work gaining credit as a solo artist. His 2008 solo release,
1000 Miles of Life, was a critical success, earning him a nomination at
the Nashville Music Awards. He has recently shared the stage with
such luminaries as Sam Bush, Jerry
Douglas, Neville Brothers, and the Meters; and
a live concert review from the Riverfront Times
describes him as, "a strong vocalist with a rough, blues-fueled style. Oates
shows the heart and skills of a classic bluesman...through creative arrangements
and a hearty sense of humor." Last year, Hall & Oates released a
long-awaited box set to rave reviews, toured to sold-out theatres and secured a
Grammy nomination in the category of Best Performance by a Pop Duo or Group. In
keeping the momentum going, John is preparing to record the follow up to 1000
Miles of Life, and will be Executive Producer and Host at the first annual
Songwriter's Expo in Aspen this September. "Oates sounds better than ever," as
one Wall Street Journal review put it, “John Oates will own 2010.”
Michael Cleveland & The Flamekeeper Band
w/Round Mountain
Fri, April 23
Award-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland brings his dynamic traditional
bluegrass to the stage with his band, Flamekeeper, in a show that will
leave the audience talking. A five-time winner of the International Bluegrass
Music Association's Fiddle Player of the Year award, Mike and his talented band
present a program of tight vocals, blistering instrumentals, and
fiddle-and-banjo duets that echo the first-generation stars of bluegrass. The
show is rounded out with Mike's dry wit and the band's sense of fun.-
Chris Barron (of
Spin Doctors)
Sat, April 24
Most often recognized as the voice of the multi-platinum selling group Spin
Doctors, Chris Barron is responsible for authoring some of the 1990s’
most enduring radio hits ("Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and "Two Princes").
Though suffering a blow to his career when doctors diagnosed him with acute
vocal cord paralysis, giving him a fifty percent chance of ever singing again,
Chris' perseverance in his return to a music career has not gone unnoticed. As a
songwriting teacher, Chris has become a key figure in the acclaimed East Village
Anti-Folk scene, which is responsible for the wildly popular Juno
soundtrack; and as he made his comeback to center stage, Chris began singing to
a different tune. "These days," says Barron, "I am writing what I like to call
‘bar music for big theaters’—stripped down, honest rock and roll like The
Last Waltz meets Exile on Main Street."
Elephant Revival—CD
Release Party
Fri, May 21
A concert celebrating the release of their new highly anticipated album,
transcendental-folk quintet Elephant Revival offers their repertoire of
Indie/Folk/Americana music. They have been called "living proof that the way
high Colorado Front Range town of Nederland continues to inspire some of the
finest and most creative music to be found anywhere. Following the lead, but not
the footsteps, of groups like Leftover Salmon and the Yonder Mountain
String Band...Elephant Revival has created a unique and appealing modern
acoustic sound, simultaneously soaked in all manner of tradition." (Colorado
Music Buzz)
Old Blind Dogs
co-presented by Celtic Events
Sat, June 26
Since forming in the early 1990's, the Old Blind Dogs have stood on the
cutting edge of Scotland’s roots revival. The band has developed its own
trademark style, with an energetic mix of songs and tunes. Claiming the award
for Best Band in the 2007 BBC Scots Trad Music Awards, the Los Angeles
Times has said "Old Blind Dogs bring freshness and color to acoustic music
steeped in centuries of Scottish folklore and history."
