Denver, January 29, 2008 - Swallow
Hill is pleased to present Toronto-based, critically acclaimed, and
award-winning Beyond the Pale, one of the most exciting ensembles in the
Canadian folk, roots, and world music scenes. They will perform at
Swallow Hill for a special Sunday evening performance on February 10 at
7 p.m.
Their explosive acoustic sound is
inspired by a wide range of cross-cultural influences, from European
folk styles (Klezmer, Balkan, Gypsy, Romanian) to contemporary and North
American styles (bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk, and more). They are
known for their instrumental virtuosity, dynamic and exuberant live
performances, and eclectic repertoire. Beyond the Pale's unique
genre-defying sound has delighted audiences at major music festivals,
concert theatres, and clubs across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Beyond
the Pale features Eric Stein (mandolin), Martin van de Ven (clarinet),
Aleksandar Gajic (violin), Bogdan Djukic (violin), Sasha Luminsky
(accordion) and Bret Higgins (bass).
The group is in the midst of recording a follow-up to their acclaimed
live CD Consensus, which earned them a number of honors,
including the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Instrumental
Group, the 2005 Toronto Independent Music Award for Best World Music
Group, and the 2005 Best Instrumental Composition Award from the Ontario
Council of Folk Festivals' songwriting competition for "Reunion." The
band produced their own music video for "KhasenJah: The Jamaican-Jewish
Wedding," and they have performed as soloists with major symphony
orchestras and choral groups in addition to collaborating with a number
of wide-ranging musical ensembles. They have also appeared in television
productions for CBC, ABC, Bravo, Showcase, OmniTV, VisionTV, and more.
One of their most recent appearances was on CBC radio for the 250th
birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, where they performed their own
unique re-imaginations of Mozart's music with a funky, east-European
folk twist.
