Larry Sandberg

As a teacher, performer, and writer/editor, Larry has worked in the music business since the folk boom of the 1960's. Larry's performing career started with the East Coast coffehouse circuit in the 60's. He is best known for his fingerpicking and plays traditional and contemporary folk, rock, and blues styles. He appeared as an actor-guitarist in the Actor's Equity Showcase production of Panhandle, and also appeared as a banjo player in the TV mini-series Centennial. He has released one recording, which features traditional and original compositions.

Larry began writing about music in the 1970's. He is known as an expert on American Music and on the guitar and has written a number of books and articles for magazines. Larry has been teaching since 1965, and has been on faculty at the Denver Folklore Center, Community College of Denver, Metro State College, and University of Colorado at Denver.

Larry teaches mostly the traditional and contemporary folk guitar styles he grew up with, although he plays in other styles as well, including Celtic, old time, and jazz.

Larry prefers to teach by example, using new songs to cumulatively build conceptual, theoretical, and motor skills and developing a coherent vision of how the guitar works. He feels strongly that tablature discourages creativity and understanding, and prefers not to use it, agreeing with the old parable that says it's more useful to teach people how to fish than to give them a fish.

Larry teaches group classes and one-hour consultations.
