Sina McOwens

Born in Los Angeles and the daughter of two musicians, Sina (pronounced like China) studied at the Lamont School of Music in Denver with the focus on piano as a child.  She is fully aware of the problems people have with learning music.  As a seven year old child, she was the victim of a truck accident and was knocked twenty eight feet.  For years, she had to rely on her ear to hear music because she could not read it.

Ms McOwens did her undergraduate work at the University of Colorado where she received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Communication Theatre and Dance with a focus on theatre singing, acting, and dancing.  She did summer stock in Redding, CA at Mount Shasta Community College under the guidance of Mr. Cecil Johnson with the same focus.  She then moved to Oakland and studied voice under the tutelage of New York Dramatic Soprano Verna Weaver, studied guitar, and helped form the touring singing group "Spirit."  After touring the west coast for approximately 3 years, she returned to Denver.  She continued her formal voice training with Mezzo Soprano Beverly Fernald and also attended the University of Denver and studied under the guidance of Mr. Larry Glenn.  During this time, Sina worked as the assistant choreographer at Machbeuf Catholic School, studied choir directing and piano, and sang in various churches in the Black community.

Sina went on to receive a Masters Degree in Humanities from the University of Colorado:  her thesis focused on the Dyslexic Musician and the injured brain.  This enabled her to understand how the human brain works within each individual and especially herself since she had suffered from a traumatic brain injury years earlier.  She is currently teaching music at Dove Christian Academy for the learning disabled and is a tutor in the Avid program.
