Ed Contreras

Ed comes to Swallow Hill with over three decades of experience as a percussionist and drummer. He plays drum kit in addition to percussion instruments from all over the world, including congas, bongos, timbales, udu, djembe, dumbek, frame drums and bodhran. He is currently performs with Safe Harbor, Laughing Hands, Runaway Express, Saxxon Woods, The Swallow Hill Traveling Folk Troupe and Katherine Dines. Ed is also a seasoned recording artist, adding his work to many CDs, including those of Marcy Baruch, Mary Stribling, Dakota Blonde, and many others. He has had the opportunity to perform at numerous venues, most notably, Chicago’s House of Blues, the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival, Red Rocks, and his most memorable performance, in 1993 at Mile High Stadium in front of an audience of 70,000 to welcome Pope John Paul II to Denver for World Youth Day.

Ed is an experienced teacher of each of the instruments he plays. He teaches techniques of many different styles of music, while including instruction in musicianship, and the intricacies of playing in ensembles, always with the emphasis on having fun.
